What are vascular lesions?

Vascular lesions are blood filled lesions, some of which include:

veins

rosacea

cherry angiomas

spider nevi

venous lakes

How are vascular lesions treated?

Vascular lesions using the Varilite diode laser by Iridex.  The patient video above shows the procedure being administered.

The red blood cells in the vessels absorb the wavelength of light used, which heat up and coagulate.  Some small vessels disappear immediately and larger ones can darken as the blood is heated. The body removes the darkened residue over the following 2 weeks.

What can I expect during the treatment?

There is minimal discomfort during this treatment. Most people rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 as approximately 2 or 3. Only laser light is used. No needles are involved and the skin is not pierced, ablated or punctured in any way.

Immediately after the treatment the skin will be red and tingly.  The redness and tingle sensation fade within a few hours. The skin may feel dry and a little rough while the dead skin cells slough off and some people experience a little puffiness for a day or two.  Most people return to work as normal with work colleagues and associates being none the wiser.

Is there any down time?

This treatment can be administered in a lunch hour because there is little or no down time.  Some people with sensitive skin may have a bit of swelling under the eyes the following day if their cheeks have been treated, which can last a few days. If so, your skin will be building collagen for a rejuvenating side effect of the treatment, which is beneficial.

If there was pigmentation on or below the skin before the treatment it may be lifted to the surface producing little dark microcrusts, which slough off after approximately 7 to 10 days revealing in a more even skin tone.

How long will it take to see the results?

Some results are seen immediately but the full effect of the treatment will be seen after 2 weeks.

How many treatments are needed?

In severe cases up to three sessions spaced at least one month apart may be required to clear vascular lesions. In milder cases one or two sessions can clear 80% of the vessels or 100% of it in the case of a single vessel or cherry angioma.
